About Toll Group

The Toll Group's story began in 1888 in Newcastle, Australia, when Albert Toll started hauling coal with a horse and cart. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become a major transport company. By the time of Albert's passing in 1958, at the age of 95, the business had expanded to operate a fleet of trucks across five locations. In 1959, National Minerals purchased the business, and a decade later, it became part of the mining conglomerate Peko Wallsend. Peko Wallsend utilized Toll for all its transport needs, transforming it into a significant domestic carrier. The company later became Toll-Chadwick as new owners sought to integrate businesses and venture into containerized shipping. By the mid-1980s, Toll-Chadwick had established itself as one of Australia's largest transport operations outside of major cities.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1986 when the company was bought by its management team, led by Paul Little and Peter Rowsthorn. They envisioned growing the business by acquiring smaller, strategically located transport companies. This strategy proved successful, and in 1993, Toll was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Post-listing, Toll embarked on a program of strategic acquisitions, significantly expanding its reach and service capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region. A key acquisition was SembCorp Logistics (SembLog) in 2006, which greatly increased Toll's presence in South East Asia, Greater China, and the Indian Sub-Continent. In 2015, Japan Post acquired Toll Group, aiming to leverage Toll's expertise to grow its global logistics operations, particularly in Asia. Toll retained its brand and Melbourne headquarters, continuing its expansion with significant investments like the AU$228 million Toll City logistics facility in Singapore in 2017. Today, Toll Group operates with dual headquarters in Melbourne and Singapore, boasting a global freight forwarding network spanning 150 countries and serving over 20,000 customers with a team of over 16,000 employees across 500 sites.
