In 1963, the United Nations General Assembly established the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) with a clear and aspirational mission to strengthen the effectiveness of the United Nations through appropriate training and research. The organization officially began operations in 1965, created specifically to train and equip young diplomats from newly-independent UN Member States with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex diplomatic environment of international relations.

Today, UNITAR has evolved into a principal training arm of the United Nations, working in every region of the world. The organization provides innovative learning solutions to individuals, organizations, and institutions to enhance global decision-making and support country-level action for shaping a better future. Through workshops, seminars, briefings, conferences, public lectures, side events, and online courses, UNITAR bridges knowledge and skills gaps to assist mainly developing countries with special attention to Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The institute focuses on key thematic areas including peace, people, planet, prosperity, multilateral diplomacy, and accelerating SDG implementation, with programs delivered through its headquarters in Geneva, New York Office, Hiroshima Office, and Bonn Office, as well as through its global network of CIFAL training centres.
