The organization recognized that to address a challenge as vast as climate change, a global social movement was essential. The name '350' signifies 350 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide (CO2), identified by scientists as the safe upper limit in the atmosphere to prevent a climate tipping point. However, by the time 350.org was established, this threshold had already been surpassed. This reality fuels the organization's urgency and commitment to action. Our customers, the global community and future generations, face the escalating impacts of the climate crisis – from extreme weather events to threats to livelihoods and ecosystems. This is why 350.org is dedicated to ending the use of fossil fuels and facilitating a just transition to renewable energy.
