In 2015, two architects from Zaha Hadid's world-renowned research lab discovered something troubling: modern automation wasn't just complex - it was actively restricting innovation across industries. Mostafa ElSayed and Suryansh Chandra realized their combined expertise in computational research and design could solve this problem. What started as an exploration of robotics for architectural engineering quickly evolved into a broader mission when they recognized that robotic automation was being deployed in unnecessarily complex ways that limited its potential.

Focusing their efforts where they could make the greatest impact, Automata narrowed its vision to the life sciences sector. The founders saw an opportunity to reimagine lab automation as open, integrated, and accessible - rather than specialized, fragmented, and human-dependent. This insight led to the development of the world's first fully automated lab bench and its accompanying software platform, LINQ.
