About AWAL

AWAL, an acronym for 'Artists Without A Label', embarked on its journey in 1997, founded in Ojai, California, by Denzyl Feigelson, with early guidance from Andrew Ungerleider. The company's trajectory took a significant turn in 2004 when it joined forces with record producers Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby. This collaboration marked the beginning of AWAL's mission to offer a compelling alternative to the traditional record label model. The core philosophy was, and continues to be, empowering artists by providing them with the resources and global reach typically associated with major labels, while crucially allowing them to retain ownership and creative control over their music. This artist-first approach quickly resonated within the independent music scene.

The company's evolution continued when AWAL UK was acquired by Kobalt Music Group in December 2012, becoming Kobalt's digital music distribution arm. This integration provided AWAL with enhanced capabilities and a broader platform. A pivotal moment arrived in March 2018 when Kobalt announced a substantial $150 million investment into AWAL, consolidating all of Kobalt's recording business under the AWAL brand. This strategic move solidified AWAL's position as a significant player in the music industry. The narrative took another significant step in 2021 when Sony Music Entertainment acquired AWAL from Kobalt Music Group for $430 million. This acquisition has further amplified AWAL's global presence and resources, enabling it to support an even wider array of independent artists. Today, AWAL boasts a global footprint with offices in major music hubs including London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Sydney, continuing its commitment to fostering artist independence and success worldwide.
