About Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is America's leading gun violence prevention organization, with a legacy of bipartisan leadership spanning over five decades. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Mark Borinsky, who survived being robbed and nearly murdered at gunpoint, the organization was originally called the National Council to Control Handguns. The movement gained national momentum in 1981 when White House Press Secretary Jim Brady was seriously injured in an assassination attempt on President Reagan. His wife, Sarah Brady, subsequently joined the organization and became its chair in 1989, dedicating decades to championing sensible gun violence prevention solutions.

The organization's unique three-pronged approach distinguishes it from other gun violence prevention groups: changing laws through policy reform at federal, state, and local levels; changing the gun industry through oversight and legal accountability; and changing culture through evidence-based behavior change campaigns. Brady is survivor-led, with many leaders and team members having experienced the devastating impact of gun violence firsthand. The organization has been instrumental in establishing the Brady Background Check System, which has prevented over 5 million prohibited gun transactions since its establishment in 1994. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Brady operates as both a 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization.
