In 1984, the Center for Disability & Elder Law (CDEL) began its journey as the Legal Clinic for the Disabled, born from a recognition that older adults and people with disabilities in Cook County, Illinois faced significant barriers to accessing the legal system. For over forty years, CDEL has been dedicated to expanding access to justice for persons marginalized by poverty, age, and disability.

Today, CDEL stands as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income older adults and people with disabilities throughout Cook County. The organization focuses on matters related to financial and housing stability, estate planning including end-of-life planning, divorce, and adult guardianship. CDEL works alongside a network of dedicated volunteers, including attorneys, paralegals, law students, and community partners, to deliver high-quality legal representation and advocacy. In 2025 alone, CDEL worked over 3,073 cases and engaged more than 12,000 volunteer hours, demonstrating its deep commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of the Chicago community.
