The story of Costain begins in 1865 on the Isle of Man, where Richard Costain and his future brother-in-law, Richard Kneen, decided to leave their farming roots behind. They crossed the Irish Sea to the booming port of Liverpool, establishing themselves as jobbing builders. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Costain cemented its reputation as a global engineering powerhouse. The company delivered iconic infrastructure such as the Thames Barrier, protecting London from floods, and was a key partner in the consortium that built the Channel Tunnel, one of the most ambitious construction projects in history.
