About DeepScribe

DeepScribe's journey began from personal encounters with the burdensome nature of medical documentation and its profound impact on both clinicians and patients. Co-founders Akilesh Bapu and Matthew Ko, having witnessed these challenges firsthand, established DeepScribe in 2017 with a clear vision: to revolutionize how clinicians document patient care. Akilesh, whose father is a physician, observed the immense stress and time consumed by writing patient notes. He recognized that the 2009 healthcare act, mandating the transition from paper to electronic records, inadvertently disrupted workflows rather than streamlining them. This insight, coupled with Matthew's experiences as a caregiver which highlighted inaccuracies in existing transcription systems, fueled their determination. They identified a critical gap: while many documentation tools existed, none adequately addressed the time-intensive summarization aspect of note-taking, a task consuming roughly one-third of a physician's time.

Initially, the path was arduous. Akilesh and Matthew, both UC Berkeley alumni with a shared interest in AI and Deep Learning, spent over six months developing their tool. Early attempts to gather feedback from doctors proved challenging, with many being too busy or skeptical about the technology's ability to save time or be trustworthy. However, their persistence paid off. After numerous rejections, the 21st doctor they approached embraced their solution, signaling they had achieved product-market fit. This pivotal moment validated their efforts and set the stage for DeepScribe's growth. The company's mission crystallized: to bring the joy of care back to medicine by enabling AI and healthcare professionals to work in harmony. Today, DeepScribe leverages ambient AI to automate the creation of detailed clinical notes by transforming natural patient-clinician conversations, thereby allowing healthcare providers to dedicate their focus to patient care rather than administrative tasks. Trained on one of the world's largest databases of de-identified patient conversations, DeepScribe's AI platform is designed to adapt to the specific needs of various medical specialties and manage complex cases. The company has processed and labeled over 3 million such conversations to train its proprietary large language models, including HealAI, which has demonstrated high accuracy in clinical documentation.

DeepScribe's commitment to innovation and excellence has been recognized within the healthcare industry. In early 2025, KLAS Research awarded DeepScribe a 98.8 overall performance score, underscoring its effectiveness. The company has also forged significant partnerships with organizations like Pearl Health, Flatiron Health, and Covenant HealthCare, expanding its reach and impact. These collaborations aim to integrate DeepScribe's ambient AI technology into various healthcare platforms, further reducing administrative burdens for clinicians and enhancing patient care. Financially, DeepScribe has secured substantial funding, including a $30 million Series A round in 2022, to fuel its growth and development. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, DeepScribe continues to evolve, driven by a strong moral compass and a dedication to the responsible and transparent use of AI in healthcare.
