In 1924, Pope Pius XI established the Diocese of Raleigh, recognizing the growing need for a dedicated Catholic administrative body to serve the spiritual needs of eastern North Carolina. Originally covering the entire state, the diocese has since grown to encompass 54 counties in the eastern half of North Carolina, a region spanning 33,088 square miles with a population of over 5.6 million people.

Today, the Diocese of Raleigh serves approximately 510,000 Catholics through a network of 81 parishes, 13 missions, and four centers for college campus ministry. The diocese is home to 171 diocesan, religious order, and extern priests who minister to communities across the region. Under the leadership of Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama, the diocese has embraced a diverse and growing population, including an expanding Hispanic community and Catholics from African and Asian countries.

The diocese operates through numerous offices and ministries, including the Office of Education which oversees Catholic schools, Catholic Charities providing social services to all people regardless of faith, and the Tribunal handling canonical matters. The chancery, located at The Catholic Center in Raleigh, houses administrative offices including Business and Fiscal Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Communications.
