About INPO

We are the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the highest levels of safety and reliability in the operation of commercial nuclear power plants. Established in 1979 by the nuclear power industry following the Three Mile Island accident, our mission is to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement across the sector. We believe that the nuclear industry must set and police its own standards of excellence, going beyond mere regulatory compliance to ensure the utmost safety for the public and the environment.

Our work involves a comprehensive approach to industry oversight and support. We conduct regular, detailed evaluations of nuclear power plants to identify strengths and areas for improvement, sharing these insights to elevate performance industry-wide. Through our National Academy for Nuclear Training, we accredit training programs to ensure that nuclear professionals possess the knowledge and skills necessary for safe operations. We also facilitate the sharing of operating experiences and best practices, allowing our members to learn from one another and prevent events before they occur. By partnering with every commercial nuclear power plant in the United States, as well as international organizations like the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), we strive to maintain an exemplary safety record and secure the future of nuclear energy.
