We are the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law to advance peace and sustainable development. Our mission is to champion people-centered justice and help build more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. Our history began in 1983 when we were founded as a non-governmental organization, the International Development Law Institute, by a group of legal advisors. In 1988, we became an intergovernmental organization, and since 2001, we have held Observer Status at the United Nations. This unique position allows us to contribute to global policy discussions and advocate for the importance of the rule of law on the international stage. Our approach is rooted in local ownership and partnership. We work closely with governments, civil society, and legal professionals to ensure that our programs are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of the countries we serve.
