About International Paralympic Committee

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement and is based in Bonn, Germany. Founded on 22 September 1989 as a non-profit organisation, the IPC serves and supports its 200-plus member organisations, develops Para sport, and advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities worldwide.

Working with its vast network of National Paralympic Committees, International Federations, and Regional Organisations, the IPC uses Para sport as a powerful vehicle to advance the lives of the world's 1.2 billion persons with disabilities. The organisation oversees the delivery of the Paralympic Games, which have grown from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome 1960 to become the world's second biggest sporting event. As of 1 January 2026, the IPC has 211 member organisations spanning 185 National Paralympic Committees, 18 International Federations, 5 Regional Organisations, and 3 International Organisations of Sport for the Disabled. The work of the Paralympic Movement has a transformational impact on society, with a strong belief that Change Starts with Sport motivates its international workforce to fulfil its vision of creating an inclusive world through Para sport.
