Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) is a public and private non-profit collaboration dedicated to improving the healthcare experience, enhancing quality, and reducing costs for the people of Michigan. Founded in 2010, MiHIN was established following the HITECH Act, with the State of Michigan receiving federal funding to develop a statewide health information exchange (HIE). MiHIN serves as Michigan's state-designated entity for the legal, technical, and private exchange of health information. The organization has evolved significantly, addressing the data silos that emerged from various hospital systems and electronic health record software. Today, MiHIN operates as a consolidated, statewide public-private partnership, playing a crucial role in Michigan's health infrastructure.

MiHIN's network connects a vast array of healthcare stakeholders, including hospitals, outpatient facilities, skilled nursing facilities, physician organizations, pharmacies, health plans, and public health agencies. The system routes information for over 13 million patients and processes a significant volume of healthcare data, with participating hospitals sending notifications for approximately 99% of all admissions in the state. To manage this scale and ensure robust security and flexibility, MiHIN transitioned to a 100% cloud-based infrastructure, primarily leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS). This move to a cloud-native, serverless, event-driven microservices architecture allows MiHIN to scale cost-effectively and innovate rapidly. The organization is continually evolving its technology platform, with a focus on adopting HL7® FHIR® standards to support future technological transformations and enhance interoperability. MiHIN also engages in strategic affiliations and partnerships, such as with Great Lakes Health Connect (GLHC) and Smile Digital Health, to deepen its impact and align with national efforts like the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). Through its subsidiary, the Interoperability Institute, MiHIN fosters innovation and develops the next generation of health IT professionals.
