About Middle East Institute

The Middle East Institute (MEI), founded in 1946, is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. Our mission is to promote knowledge of the Middle East in America and strengthen understanding between the peoples and governments of the region. At MEI, we believe that understanding the region’s complexities is essential for fostering constructive dialogue and relationships.

As a non-profit, non-partisan think tank, MEI engages in policy analysis, educational initiatives, and cultural exchanges that highlight the importance of the Middle East in global affairs. We provide insights and resources on U.S.-Middle East relations, regional conflicts, security issues, and cultural developments. Our programs include expert briefings, public events, academic courses in Middle Eastern languages, and exhibitions that showcase contemporary Middle Eastern art. By building connections between scholars, policymakers, and the public, MEI seeks to create a more informed and engaged citizenry regarding the Middle East.
