In 1971, a group of Indigenous women in Thunder Bay, Ontario came together around a kitchen table with a shared vision: to create an organization that would advocate for and empower Indigenous women and their families across the province. This humble beginning sparked the formation of the Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA), which has since grown into the oldest and largest Indigenous women's agency in Canada. The founding women recognized that isolated Indigenous women's organizations needed to unite to create meaningful change, and their grassroots movement has evolved into a powerful voice for Indigenous women's rights, safety, and wellbeing.

Today, ONWA represents more than 35 Indigenous women's organizations and groups throughout Ontario, with an agency of over 200 employees delivering programming at 26 sites across the province. The organization's mission centers on celebrating and honoring the safety and healing of Indigenous women and girls as they take up leadership roles in their families, communities, and beyond. ONWA's impact is profound - reaching 372,700 community members and providing over 186,000 direct services to Indigenous women and their families in 2023-2024 alone. Through research, policy development, advocacy, and culturally grounded programs, ONWA continues to drive systemic change while amplifying Indigenous women's voices at the provincial, national, and international levels, including recognition at the United Nations.
