About Schibsted

The story of Schibsted is a remarkable journey that began in 1839 when Christian Michael Schibsted laid the foundation for what would become a media powerhouse by establishing Chr. Schibsteds Forlag, a publishing company. This initial venture set the stage for a long and storied history in the world of media. In 1860, the company took a significant step forward with the launch of the Christiania Adresseblad newspaper, which would later be renamed Aftenposten in 1885. This newspaper became a cornerstone of the company's identity and a trusted source of information for the Norwegian public. The acquisition of Verdens Gang (VG) in 1966 further solidified Schibsted's dominant position in the Norwegian media landscape, with VG eventually surpassing Aftenposten in circulation in 1981. For generations, Schibsted remained a family-owned enterprise, deeply rooted in the values of quality journalism and public service.

A pivotal moment in Schibsted's evolution occurred in 1989 under the leadership of Tinius Nagell-Erichsen. The company transitioned from a family-owned business to a corporation, a move that culminated in its listing on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1992. This marked the beginning of a new era of expansion and diversification. Recognizing the transformative power of the internet, Schibsted began to shift its focus towards digital marketplaces, launching successful platforms like Finn.no in Norway and acquiring Blocket.se in Sweden. This strategic pivot into online classifieds proved to be immensely successful. In a significant corporate restructuring in 2019, Schibsted spun off its international online marketplaces into a separate entity called Adevinta. More recently, in 2024, Schibsted underwent another transformation, selling its media operations to the Tinius Trust, resulting in two distinct companies: Schibsted Media, a fully-owned media company, and a publicly listed marketplaces company that will continue the Schibsted legacy in the digital realm.
