The team designs, manufactures, installs, and supports a broad range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and insights at the micro-, nano-, and picometer scale.

By combining expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy with deep application knowledge across materials science, life sciences, electronics, and natural resources markets, our Electron Microscopy teams help customers accelerate discovery, solve advanced technical challenges, and bring new innovations to life.

How You Will Make an Impact

As an Installation Engineer II, you will be responsible for installing sophisticated electron microscopy systems at customer sites and ensuring those systems are ready for customer use. You will play a critical role at one of the most important moments in the customer relationship: turning a complex, high-value instrument into a fully functioning workflow.

This role is ideal for a technically strong service or installation engineer who enjoys hands-on work with advanced technology, customer interaction, travel, and problem-solving in complex scientific and industrial environments.

What you will do

  • Conduct on-site installation of sophisticated electron microscopy and related analytical systems.
  • Follow established installation, alignment, calibration, and testing procedures to confirm equipment is functioning properly.
  • Partner with customers, system users, and internal teams to ensure a smooth installation experience.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues that arise during installation or early system use.
  • Support scheduled maintenance activities when needed to ensure ongoing system performance.
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair support for customers and other field personnel.
  • Travel, often on short notice, to customer sites to support installations, resolve issues, or assist other field service colleagues.
  • Complete and submit accurate field service and installation reports.
  • Train customers and users on basic system operation, maintenance expectations, and best practices.
  • Provide feedback to product quality, service, and engineering teams based on field observations.
  • Support updates, corrections, and improvements to Thermo Fisher system documentation.
  • Identify, isolate, and communicate outstanding system issues clearly and professionally.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for colleagues, customers, and training activities.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and compliance expectations while working with high-voltage, ultra-high vacuum, and complex electromechanical systems.

How You Will Get Here

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, electronics, physics, chemistry, or a related technical field and 3+ years of hands-on technical experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex analytical or scientific equipment such as SEM , TEM , FIB , or similar systems or combination of education and technical experience.
  • Experience with sophisticated analysis tools such as scanning electron microscopes , transmission electron microscopes , focused ion beam systems , or similar high-precision electromechanical systems preferred.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing ultra-high vacuum and high-voltage systems strongly preferred.
  • Additional relevant technical certifications are advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong electronics, mechanical, and systems-level troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex systems and subsystems down to the component level.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, technical drawings, service procedures, and system documentation.
  • Familiarity with ultra-high vacuum technology, high-voltage systems, precision instrumentation, and related safety practices.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with customers, system users, and internal teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional working proficiency in English.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently in the field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Windows-based software environments, and service management tools.
  • Ability to document service and installation activities clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to train and support customers on system use and maintenance.
  • Ability to respond to customer needs with short notice and manage changing priorities.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain a valid passport and travel regionally and internationally as required.
  • Ability to travel up to 75+% within the assigned territory (US) or as business needs require.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in laboratory, manufacturing, research, or customer-site environments.
