Job description

Data Architect at Privia Health

Privia Health™ is a technology-driven, national physician enablement company that collaborates with medical groups, health plans, and health systems to optimize physician practices, improve patient experiences, and reward doctors for delivering high-value care in both in-person and virtual settings. The Privia Platform is led by top industry talent and exceptional physician leadership, and consists of scalable operations and end-to-end, cloud-based technology that reduces unnecessary healthcare costs, achieves better outcomes, and improves the health of patients and the well-being of providers

We are looking for a Data Architect to lead the technical vision, architectural strategy, and data modeling frameworks for our enterprise data platform. In this role, you will define how healthcare data—spanning EMRs, medical and pharmacy claims, value-based care contracts, and payer attribution files—is structured, integrated, and governed across Privia Health.

You will act as the primary architect for our enterprise Snowflake ecosystem, driving the adoption of Medallion Architecture principles (Bronze, Silver, Gold) alongside dbt, Python, and cloud infrastructure. Working closely with Data Engineers, Analytics Leads, and Product Managers within an Agile framework, you will ensure our data platform is scalable, performant, secure, and built on architectural best practices.

Primary Job Duties

  • Enterprise Architecture Strategy: Define, execute, and govern the overall data architecture roadmap on the Snowflake platform, establishing technical standards, data integration patterns, and best practices across the data organization.
  • Medallion Architecture & Data Modeling: Design and standardize Privia’s multi-layered data architecture (Bronze/Staging, Silver/Conformed, Gold/Marts). Establish core data modeling patterns (Kimball dimensional modeling, Data Vault, slowly changing dimensions) tailored for complex healthcare datasets.
  • Healthcare Domain Integration: Blueprint schemas and integration strategies for heterogeneous healthcare data sources, including EMR systems (e.g., AthenaHealth, Epic, eClinicalWorks), historical and ongoing medical/pharmacy claims, eligibility, and Value-Based Care (VBC) attribution and quality metrics.
  • Snowflake Optimization & Governance: Establish platform-level Snowflake best practices for performance tuning, warehouse sizing, cost management (finops), RBAC security models, zero-copy cloning, and time travel.
  • Pipeline Frameworks & Best Practices: Partner with Data Engineers to establish standardized dbt, Python, and orchestration frameworks, ensuring that pipelines built by mid-level and senior engineers adhere to scalable design patterns, rigorous testing, and CI/CD standards.
  • Data Governance, Security & HIPAA: Collaborate with Security and Compliance teams to enforce strict HIPAA compliance, PHI/PII data masking, column/row-level security, data lineage, and data cataloging standards across the ecosystem.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the technical authority for data initiatives. Provide architectural guidance during sprint planning, lead technical design reviews, and mentor engineers on advanced SQL, modeling, and system design.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Analytics, Clinical, and Product stakeholders to understand business capabilities, evaluate tradeoffs, and translate complex healthcare business requirements into scalable architectural blueprints.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in Data Architecture, Data Engineering, or Data Platform roles, with a proven track record of designing cloud data platforms.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and optimizing enterprise data solutions directly on Snowflake.
  • Strong expertise in Medallion Architecture design patterns and modern cloud data warehouse design principles (Kimball, Star Schema, Data Vault, SCD types).
  • Expertise in establishing best practices for dbt (data build tool) at scale, including project organization, macro design, testing frameworks, and dbt Mesh/semantic layer architecture.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL for complex data modeling, schema design, and query optimization.
  • Deep experience with Python for establishing software engineering patterns in data platforms, API integrations, and automation framework design.
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS), version control (Git), and modern CI/CD data pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA, PHI) and implementing security frameworks (RBAC, column-level masking, data access policies) in Snowflake.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex architectural tradeoffs to executive, technical, and business stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications

Strong domain experience in Healthcare Data, specifically working with

  • Claims Data: Professional, institutional, and pharmacy claims (837/835 formats, claim lines, grouping/grouper logic).
  • EMR/EHR Systems: Clinical data extraction, HL7/FHIR formats, and clinical data standardization.
  • Value-Based Care (VBC): Patient attribution/roster files, risk adjustment (HCC scores), quality measures (HEDIS, eCQMs), and shared savings models.
  • Experience with cloud file storage (GCS/S3), SFTP workflows, and ingestion tooling (Fivetran, Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect).
  • Familiarity with data observability, data quality automation (e.g., Monte Carlo, Great Expectations), and data cataloging solutions (e.g., Alation, Atlan).
  • Snowflake Certified Data Architect certification.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Data Engineering, or a related field.

The salary range for this role is $1280,000.00 to $150,000.00 in base pay and exclusive of any bonuses or benefits (medical, dental, vision, life, and pet insurance, 401K, paid time off, and other wellness programs). This role is also eligible for an annual bonus targeted at 15% a nd restricted stock units . The base pay offered will be determined based on relevant factors such as experience, education, and geographic location.

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.

Technical Requirements (for remote workers only, not applicable for onsite/in office work):

In order to successfully work remotely, supporting our patients and providers, we require a minimum of 5 MBPS for Download Speed and 3 MBPS for the Upload Speed. This should be acquired prior to the start of your employment. The best measure of your internet speed is to use online speed tests like https://www.speedtest.net/ . This gives you an update as to how fast data transfer is with your internet connection and if it meets the minimum speed requirements. Work with your internet provider if you have questions about your connection. Employees who regularly work from home offices are eligible for expense reimbursement to offset this cost.
