Job description

Software Engineer II, Backend (Test Infra) at Affirm

At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most.

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest.

We are seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer II with strong experience in test automation to contribute to Developer Productivity, with a focus on Test Platform Engineering. The Test Infra team empowers developers to efficiently write, run, analyze, and maintain automated tests. The team’s goals include expanding testing capabilities; building and maintaining testing frameworks; optimizing test orchestration; improving post-run reporting; ensuring the performance and reliability of CI pipelines; introducing AI-driven solutions to enhance developer productivity; and promoting best practices for test automation across the organization.

As a Software Engineer II in Test Platform Engineering, you will play a key role in building and evolving the core testing infrastructure that supports engineering productivity across the organization. Your work will have a direct impact on how hundreds of engineers develop, validate, and deliver high-quality software. You will focus on designing and maintaining scalable, reliable, and developer-friendly frontend and backend test automation solutions, as well as CI pipelines, enabling teams to deliver changes with confidence and receive fast, actionable feedback. You will collaborate closely with the Engineering Manager and the team in Europe to continuously improve quality.

Affirm is growing fast and we want you to enable us to scale our products to 10x and beyond through building world-class systems that enable Affirm in its mission to provide honest financial products that improve lives.

What you'll do

  • Own, improve, and maintain integration and E2E test automation frameworks, along with their associated CI pipelines.
  • Design and implement technical solutions to optimize test execution time and enhance test stability.
  • Write technical specifications and ADRs, contribute to technical solution design, and collaborate with engineers across the company.
  • Support engineering teams by assisting with triage requests and sharing best practices for quality assurance and test automation.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the company’s overall test strategy.
  • With the support of your team’s tech lead and manager, you will break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery of your work.
  • This role includes participation in an on-call rotation

What We Look For

  • An East Coast location to enable smoother collaboration with European colleagues.
  • 3+ years of experience in test automation.
  • Proficient in both TypeScript and Python.
  • Hands-on experience with Playwright and Pytest.
  • Experience in building and optimizing CI pipelines.
  • Experience with Docker and AWS.
  • Strong background in quality assurance, test design, and in-depth knowledge of testing techniques and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, both verbal and written, with proficiency in asynchronous communication methods such as tech specs, RFCs, wikis, and project plans.
  • Experience in building or enhancing test automation frameworks and infrastructure is highly desirable.
  • Mobile, infrastructure and performance test automation experience will be considered a significant advantage.
  • Eager to grow and continuously learn new skills.
  • You have mastered taking a simple problem or business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple software components, and executing on it by writing clear, easily understood, well tested and extensible code.
  • Your experience demonstrates that you take ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback from your team, your manager, and your stakeholders
  • This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
