Job description

Director, Assessment Content at Instructure

At Instructure, we believe in the power of people to grow and succeed throughout their lives. Our goal is to amplify that power by creating intuitive products that simplify learning and personal development, facilitate meaningful relationships, and inspire people to go further in their education and careers.

We do this by giving smart, creative, passionate people opportunities to create awesome. And that's where you come in:

We are hiring for a Director, Assessment Content

As a Director, Assessment Content, at Instructure, you will lead the teams that design, write, edit, and research the content behind our assessment products. You'll own how that content gets made, from first design to final delivery. You'll work closely with Product Management, which sets the product roadmap. Your job is to shape that roadmap with deep content and research expertise, then lead your teams to deliver on it with quality, speed, and discipline. You'll also run a global workforce of US-based and offshore teams, and you'll make smart, strategic calls about where and how the work gets done.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Lead the Assessment Content team (design, editorial, copy edit, and shared services) through subteam Managers/Senior Managers, and the Assessment Research team (researchers, a statistical programmer, and a psychometrician) fostering tight collaboration across teams to drive an integrated, end-to-end assessment development and research processes
  • Own delivery of the assessment roadmap, including planning, staffing, timelines, and quality.
  • Partner with Product Management to shape the roadmap, through content expertise, research, and market insights, including emerging technology and new product opportunities.
  • Manage a million-dollar-plus operating budget and decide how to spread work across US teams, offshore teams, and vendors.
  • Oversee content rights, including licensing, work-for-hire agreements, international distribution rights, and rights in perpetuity, in partnership with Legal and Procurement.
  • Find practical ways to use AI in content design, editing, and review to speed up work while protecting quality.
  • Hire, coach, and grow leaders, and build a team that can take on new kinds of work as the business changes.

HERE'S WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW/HAVE

  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) in education, educational measurement, psychometrics, instructional design, or a related field preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in assessment content development, assessment research, or product development within the education industry.
  • Seven or more years of people leadership experience, including leading managers and teams with a mix of specialties.
  • Deep assessment expertise, including test construction, blueprints, item specifications, accessibility compliance and psychometric concepts like validity and reliability.
  • Proven track record of running large, distributed content operations, including budget ownership and management of offshore teams and vendors.
  • Working knowledge of content licensing, work-for-hire, international distribution rights, and rights in perpetuity.
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools in content development, with good judgment about where they help and where they don't.
  • Strong operational leadership, with the ability to deliver against a roadmap while influencing its direction.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and visual), with the ability to build trust with everyone from individual contributors to executive leadership.
  • A passion for education and a commitment to the Instructure mission.
