About the Team

Digital Enterprise Technology (DET) at Salesforce builds the internal engines that power our business. The Machine Learning & Innovation (MLI) team is the applied science and infrastructure strike-force responsible for "Foundry," our unified ML/AI Platform. We operate as "Customer Zero," building the high-velocity, real-time streaming feature platforms and recommendation models that power internal products like the Events App and enterprise-wide personalization.

Role Overview

As a Principal Scientist, you will drive the core algorithmic research and mathematical modeling that underpins our most advanced machine learning capabilities. You will focus on session-based behavioral modeling and the creation of high-dimensional embedding spaces that represent complex user interactions. Your scientific leadership will ensure that Salesforce maintains proprietary, cutting-edge algorithmic capabilities in-house.

What you'll do

• Lead the scientific research and development of core algorithms supporting real-time recommendation services (e.g., SessionFlow).
• Design and train high-dimensional vector embeddings to capture nuanced behavioral signals from raw event streams.
• Translate complex mathematical concepts into production-grade embedding architectures and statistical validation frameworks.
• Develop validation dashboards and exploratory data analysis tools to ensure the integrity and quality of algorithmic outputs.
• Stay abreast of state-of-the-art research in representation learning, sequential recommendations, and neural architectures, applying relevant findings to enterprise problems.
• Serve as a primary scientific authority, providing peer review and architectural guidance on complex modeling decisions across the organization.

What you bring

• PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related quantitative field.
• 15+ years of experience in algorithmic research, statistical modeling, and applied machine learning.
• Deep expertise in representation learning, vector embeddings, and sequential/session-based recommendation models.
• Advanced proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas).
• A strong portfolio of translating theoretical ML research into practical, scalable production systems.
• Exceptional analytical skills with a proven ability to debug complex mathematical and algorithmic anomalies in high-volume data streams.
