Clinical Product Lead

About the role

At Headway, we're building the future of behavioral health — and increasingly, that means shipping products that providers and patients rely on every day. We're hiring a Clinical Product Lead to own the clinical judgment behind how risk gets detected, escalated, and closed out across our platform, and to make sure every product surface we build is connected to the safety systems behind it.

Headway already has real safety capability through risk detection, human triage, a 24/7 crisis partner, and more. However as our platform expands, particularly into AI tooling, so does our need for a single coherent system and point of ownership for patient safety across product surfaces.

This role sits on our Clinical Product team, partnering daily with engineering, product, and clinical operations. You'll also carry the clinical safety bar for our AI surfaces.

This is a first-of-its-kind role. You'll help define what "safe" means for a behavioral health platform operating at the scale of our network — and then build the products and systems that make it true rather than aspirational.

YOU WILL

• Own the clinical requirements for how patient risk is detected and mitigated through our platform surfaces including the patient portal, support chat and phone, clinical assessments, conversational intake, and more. Drive us toward one shared severity taxonomy and routing model.
• Serve as the Clinical Product Patient Safety partner for product features that carry the potential for risk disclosure. Define safety requirements and safeguards, integrate the product into existing escalations structures, and red-team the failure points. Stay with the feature after launch to review how the safeguards performed.
• Audit our product surfaces to identify patient safety gaps. Collaborate within the clinical team and with cross functional partners to close those gaps.
• Support us in holding the clinical safety and quality bar for our AI surfaces such as AI-generated clinical notes, treatment planning, and conversational tools. Write rubrics, label the gold-standard cases our models learn from, and audit model output against your own clinical assessment.
• Resolve risk-ownership questions and ensure that our policies and the platform clearly and accurately reflect that position.
• Communicate tradeoffs clearly to non-clinical stakeholders — including when speed, scale, or automation must be balanced against clinical rigor — and push back constructively when product or technical decisions conflict with sound clinical judgment.

YOU WILL LOVE THIS ROLE IF

• You are an Independently Licensed Therapist (LPC, LCSW, PhD, or PsyD) with 3+ years of post-graduate clinical experience.
• You have worked inside a safety or quality system and feel extremely confident in risk assessment and safety planning, and crisis response.
• You are a systems thinker. You can look at a set of disconnected escalation paths and see the single model underneath.
• You thrive working quickly and cross-functionally with engineers, product partners, and operations teams. You're comfortable saying "what you’re proposing carries some risk, and here's the clinical reason why," and you know how to make that feedback actionable for people who don't share your clinical training.
• You are a first-principles thinker who can break down fuzzy clinical concepts (therapeutic alliance, medical necessity, risk assessment, patient safety) into something concrete enough to label, evaluate, and ship against.
• You have a working understanding of how AI models are evaluated — concepts like precision, recall, and false positive rates don't intimidate you, and you can connect them to real clinical consequences (e.g., what it means for a model to miss a safety concern vs. over-flag one).
• You are flexible and energized by ambiguity. Headway's clinical AI roadmap will shift across the next year, and you're excited to flex across quality, safety, and product AI projects as our needs evolve.
• You are motivated by the opportunity to improve access to high-quality behavioral healthcare at scale.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The expected base pay range for this position is $127,840 - $188,000, based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
